Back in 2020, the great Sir David Attenborough released a Netflix documentary called ‘A Life on Our Planet’. In this, he issued his most explicit warning of an environmental catastrophe.
“The natural world is fading. The evidence is all around. It’s happened in my lifetime. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. This film is my witness statement and my vision for the future, the story of how we came to make this our greatest mistake, and how, if we act now, we can yet put it right”.

There is a word that is absolutely key within his statement: ‘Act’.
Making a change towards sustainable living is no longer just about recycling your plastics at the end of the day. It has evolved into so much more than that.
Hence, Bamboo Barter was born.
Why Bamboo Barter was Created
Bamboo Barter is a sustainable, eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush brand that was created in 2021 by Rishab Dugar. Rishab has a vision that being sustainable isn’t about doing less harm to the environment, it’s about doing more good to create an overall positive impact on our planet.
So instead of buying single-use plastic toothbrushes, buyers can switch out for an eco-friendly alternative with bamboo toothbrushes. Not only that but Bamboo Barter was created with the idea of Take 1, Give 1. With Bamboo Barter toothbrushes, instead of solely taking resources from the environment, we help to give back with our plantable seeds.
Our toothbrushes help to sprout new life for people, with plantable mint and basil seeds.
How Bamboo Barter Helps the Environment
It is estimated that around 264 million plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year in the UK alone, in which research says it can take 500 years or more to start decompose polypropylene plastic and nylon brushes (however, plastic never really decomposes).
With Bamboo Barter, we create our toothbrushes entirely from bamboo (so you’re already reducing your plastic waste there), in which our biodegradable handle can be compostable at home or via your local council’s garden waste bin. Also, our plant-based bristles are made from 100% castor oil. Not a single piece of plastic was in sight.
A standard plastic toothbrush usually weighs around 18 grams, sometimes with an additional 7 grams of packaging. If one person was to make the switch to a bamboo toothbrush, in which they replace their toothbrush every 3 months (as recommended by dentists), then they are reducing their plastic waste by at least 72 grams every year just with a toothbrush.
It might not seem like much, but let’s say if half the population in the UK were to do this…
Time for some quick maths!
264 million toothbrushes (the estimated number thrown away every year) divided by 2 = 132 million.
132 million toothbrushes x 18 grams = 2,376,000,000 grams.
2,376,000,000 grams to kilograms = 2376000 kgs.
